Before Brexit, EU regulations mandated Roam Like at Home โ free use of your UK allowance across EU countries. Since January 2021, this obligation ended entirely.
EU regulations mandated Roam Like at Home for all EU/EEA countries. UK customers used their UK data, calls and texts allowance across the EU without extra charges. Automatic and completely free.
UK operators initially maintained free roaming voluntarily after Brexit. From 2021 onward, most major UK operators introduced roaming fees or daily pass charges for EU travel as the voluntary period ended.
Each UK operator now has its own distinct EU roaming policy. Some charge per day, some per month, some include limited EU destinations. Always check your provider's current roaming page before any trip.
Most UK operators offer daily or monthly roaming passes. Fixed daily fee lets you use your UK allowance abroad. Simple but can be expensive for longer stays.
Buy a local SIM card at your destination. Get local data rates. Often cheapest for trips of a week or more. Requires an unlocked phone.
Digital eSIM from Airalo, Holafly, or Truphone. Purchase and activate before travel via app. Use alongside your regular SIM. Requires eSIM-compatible device.
Turn off mobile data roaming. Use only WiFi. Use WhatsApp, iMessage calls over WiFi. Zero roaming data charges โ but limited connectivity without WiFi access.
